Due to the popular demand and limited classes, students have to fight for spots in DLP classes. We understand you may have more questions about DLP, here’s a list of question and its answer.
In DLP school, are the science and math subjects in every class be taught in English?
Answer: Not necessarily. Most DLP schools have limits on the number of classes that are taught in English, especially for Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK). Based on parents’ feedback, many SMJK (Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan) that adopt DLP make every class a DLP. Therefore, it is best to check with the schools to which you want to enroll your children.
What are the requirements to join a DLP class?
Answer: It depends on the school. Some schools choose students based on their academic results in primary school, while others require students to take an entrance exam and use the results to decide who gets to join the class. However, in schools where every class is a DLP class, there are no additional requirements to join.
Why is there a limit on the number of DLP classes?
Answer: According to an officer from Johor Education Department, there aren’t enough teachers who can teach Science and Math subjects in English. This is the reason why schools have to reduce the number of DLP classes and student intakes.
My child’s BM is not good, can he/she join the DLP class?
Answer: Unfortunately, many schools take into consideration the student’s BM (Bahasa Melayu) results when choosing students for DLP classes. Therefore, it is best to help your child improve their BM to ensure that he or she has a better chance of getting a place in the DLP class. Generally, schools require the student to have at least TP (Tahap Penguasaan) level 4 and above for subjects BM, BI (Bahasa Inggeris), Math and Sains.
My child has been attending DLP classes in SK/SJKT, will he or she be put into a DLP class automatically in secondary school?
Answer: This is ultimately up to the school’s decision. While there is no official rule stating that previous attendance in DLP classes guarantees placement in DLP classes in secondary school, some schools may prioritize students who have previous experience in DLP classes. It’s best to check with the school directly to see what their policies are regarding DLP class placement.
The teacher recommended that my child join a DLP class. Should I consider it?
Answer: Ultimately, the decision is up to you and your child. However, many parents prefer DLP classes for a few reasons:
- Students can transition more smoothly to college or university, as many classes are taught in English.
- Learning technical and science-related terms in English may be beneficial for students planning to take STEM courses after SPM.
- There are more online resources available in English compared to Bahasa.
Consider discussing the option with your child and deciding together what would be best for their academic and personal growth.
