In case you missed the announcement, Ministry of Education Malaysia has introduced the UASA exam, which is compulsory for Malaysian primary students from Standard 4 to Standard 6 and secondary students from Form 1 to Form 3. This is a unified exams that will be held twice a year, and MoE will provide the question bank that will be used to generate the exam paper.
Here are the changes of BM UASA paper at a glance
- There will be only ONE BM paper, instead of two (BM Paper 1 & Paper 2) in the past
- Time given to answer the paper: 1 hour 15 minutes
- There is no more Bina Ayat and Ulasan
- New format that requires creative responds
- Students get to choose whether to write composition in Karangan Berformat or Karangan Tidak Berformat
At the point of writing, SJKC and SK are sharing the same question bank from MoE, meaning the questions were from the same source, hence the BM paper for SK and SJKC should be of equal level. Some has raised their concern about this as SK typically has higher standard (more difficult) for its Bahasa Melayu paper compare with SJKC. As of now, MoE maintain its stand on SJKC and SK using the same question bank. We will update this article if there is any changes.
UASA Bahasa Melayu exam paper format
The Bahasa Melayu (BM) paper has four parts, Bahagian A, B, C, and D, with a total of 50 marks. The biggest change in BM paper is the composition or Penulisan, which is in Bahagian C and D. Now the new UASA doesn’t allow you to choose the topic anymore, but the required word count is lower compare with before.
Students should pay attention to the new Bahasa Melayu paragraph writing and pay attention to the information and points given in the questions, keeping the word count below 50. In Bahagian D, choosing the format you are good at will help you ace the BM papers.
Bahagian A: 10 marks
Bahagian A will have two parts, grammar (tatabahasa) and comprehension (pemahaman petikan). It consists of ONLY multiple choice objective questions (Objektif Aneka Pilihan, OAP).
Tatabahasa: 3-5 questions, similar in format to previous exams such as filling in the blank, choosing the correct sentence, etc.
Pemahaman Petikan: 5-7 questions, answering questions based on the provided article, questions are generally simple and straightforward.
Bahagian B: 10 marks
There will be 3 – 5 questions in Bahagian B of BM paper. Again you have 2 sub-sections in Bahagian B here: Pemahaman Petikan and Tatabahasa (bersepadu), which consists of 3 – 5 question. And Respons Kritis dan Kreatif, but only 1 question here.
Objective questions here are different from Bahagian A, you will find questions in the form of choosing the answer between two options. This is termed as soalan Objektif Pelbagai Bentuk, OPB.
For the Respons Kritis dan Kreatif part, the question will be short and subjective question (Soalan Respons Terhad, SRTh). Students are required to answer questions based on the given situation or information in the exam paper. The answer cannot exceed 30 words, so don’t write a long essay, just answer the question with not more than 3 sentences.
Bahagian C: 10 marks
There is only 1 question in UASA BM Bahagian C, Penulisan Perenggan. Students will write paragraph based on the given information.
Note that this is paragraph writing, not an essay. You only need to write one paragraph and the word count cannot exceed 50.
The question type is considered Subjektif Respons Terbuka, SRTb, or loosely translate to open ended subjective question.
Bahagian D: 20 marks
This is the new UASA format BM writing, exam will only provide only 1 question, so you must answer whatever question it is. However, you can choose to write the composition, in the form of Karangan Berformat (such as Laporan, Catatan, Surat Kiriman, etc), or Karangan Tidak Berformat (such as Cerita, Perbincangan, Fakta, etc). This is something new that only applies to UASA BM paper.
In terms of the writing format, there is no changes here and it is the same with what the teachers taught before. But, do encourage students (or your children) to choose the format that they are more skilled at, this would help them greatly in the exam.
That’s all we have to share here, if you have any more question, feel free to reach out via this link!
