What is Dual Language Programme (DLP) and list of DLP schools in KL
The Dual Language Programme (DLP) is an initiative by the government to “Empower Bahasa Malaysia and strengthen English” in schools. This program allows schools to have the option to teach Math and Science subjects in either Bahasa Malaysia or English. It was launch in 2013 to replace the PPSMI (Pengajaran dan Pembelajaran Sains dan Matematik Dalam Bahasa Inggeris) programme, starting with 300 Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) throughout Malaysia.
The DLP program is highly sought-after by parents as it allows their children to learn in a language they are comfortable with while still gaining a strong understanding of the subjects. This approach also helps students to become bilingual and biliterate, which is an important skill in today’s globalized world.
However, some critics argue that the DLP program puts an extra burden on teachers who have to teach the same subjects in two languages. Additionally, some students may struggle with the switch between languages, especially if they are not fluent in both.
Despite these concerns, the DLP program remains popular among parents and students. The government continues to support the program, and more schools are expected to adopt the DLP in the future.
However, it is important for parents to be aware that not all classes in the school are are using English as the teaching medium. Some schools may only implement the DLP for certain top classes. Therefore, it is important for parents to clarify with the school while searching which Sekolah Kebangsaan to sign up their children for. Parents should also be aware that the DLP program is not a guarantee that their child will become fluent in English or achieve high grades, as the program is still subject to the teacher’s quality of teaching and the student’s willingness to learn.
As of Jan 2023, only Sekolah Kebangsaan and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan participated in the DLP programme. Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina, SJKC are still opting out of the programme.
DLP is not the only recent initiatives that MoE launches. The latest one was the introduction of new exam format in Ujian Akhir Sesi Akademik, UASA for primary school Standard 4 to 6 (semua aliran) and secondary school Form 1 to Form 3.
